Frequently asked questions

Does window tint film go on the inside or outside?

Tint Direct films should only be installed on the inside of windows. Exterior window tint films are available but these are rarely used.

Does tint film darken a room?

It depends on the VLT % of the film applied. VLT below 25% can start to darken a room. If you don't want the room darkened, choose a higher VLT %. You can read more about VLT here.

Will the film turn purple?

No, Tint Direct only supplies high quality ceramic tint films, which don't contain any dyes. It is only the dyed window tints that eventually turn purple.

Can I darken factory tinted windows?

Yes. As long as it is factory window tint, we can install window film directly on the glass. Factory window tint colour is actually a pigment in the glass. Aftermarket window film also has many more solar benefits than factory window tint. Factory tint only rejects part of the UV rays, and only rejects a small amount of heat.

Can I have half a window tinted?

This practice is not recommended as it can cause uneven heat distribution throughout the glass and may cause thermal stress to the window.

How do I clean the window film?

For the first month after installation while the film is curing to the window, do not clean it. After that, it can be cleaned with a non-abrasive cloth (like microfiber), any ammonia free cleaning solution and a window squeegee if desired.

Our home is under construction. When should the window film be applied?

Window film should ideally be installed in new or renovated buildings only when all other work has been completed. In many cases, there is a high level of dust and particles, such as wood dust or carpet fibers, in construction areas that can become trapped between the glass and the window film which need to be avoided.

Can window tint be installed on textured glass?

No, the surface must be totally flat and smooth for the tint to correctly adhere.

Does window tint film reduce glare?

Yes, definitely. In many cases you will be able to watch TV or use a computer in the middle of the day, without drawing the curtains.

Is window tint film removable?

Yes, window films can be removed if required. However, it isn't always easy to remove. For best results, contact a professional company like Tint Direct to ensure there is no damage done to the glass.

Why are there small bubbles in the film?

It's common for newly installed tint film to show some evidence of small water bubbles. It can take up to a month for the film to cure to the window, during which time the bubbles will disappear. It's important not to touch or press the bubbles as this may damage the film.

Does window film provide night time privacy?

No. Tinted window films provide good privacy in the daytime but at night when lights are on inside, people can see in. Use curtains at night.
